CHAMP Program Needs Volunteers
Kissimmee, FL: The Children's Hope and Mentoring Program (C.H.A.M.P.), sponsored by the Osceola Council on Aging and the School District of Osceola County is in need of mentors to assist with the youth based after school program. The program provides an encouraging and productive environment conducive to developing a positive relationship for elementary and middle school students and their mentors. Mentors must be at least 55 years of age.
"This is such a wonderful experience for children to have an adult role model to talk with and share their daily experiences and challenges. The students and mentors cultivate a trusting rapport resulting in the development of the students character and integrity and a rewarding experience for the mentor," stated Connie Bellanceau, Volunteer Services Director for the Council on Aging. "We need an additional 40 volunteers to match up with the number of students enrolled in the program," Bellanceau continued.
The volunteers have the choice to work with students at several different locations in Kissimmee and St. Cloud. Available locations for volunteering include Michigan Avenue Elementary, St. Cloud Middle School and St. Cloud Villas in St. Cloud and Central Avenue Elementary, Kissimmee Middle School, Boggy Creek Elementary, Parkway Middle School and the Barney E. Veal Center in Kissimmee. Volunteer hours are flexible along with their choice of locations.
The next C.H.A.M.P program will begin in late August 2008 with the beginning of the next school year. Volunteers are encouraged to contact the Council early to allow time for the necessary background screenings to take place.
