Charity Tournament Benefits Meals on Wheels

On December 4, the Stonegate Women's Golf Association of Solivita sent the Council on Aging's Meals of Wheels Program an early holiday gift. More than 100 Solivita residents participated in the charity golf tournament raising more than $7,500 for the Council. "This is fantastic," exclaimed Beverly Hougland, CEO of the Council on Aging. "You have no idea how important this donation is to our organization and to our clients," she continued.
Many gated communities have a reputation of not just closing off access to their community but 'closing' their minds and eyes to the community outside of their gates. Solivita is not in that category. Linda Woodhall and her committee of residents ensured Solivita was engaging the community by choosing the Osceola Council on Aging's Meals on Wheels Program to be the recipient of the annual Stonegate Women's Golf Association Charity Golf Tournament. "We know how important the Meals on Wheels Program is to the residents of Poinciana and even in our own community," Woodhall stated. "Its not just the meal, as important as the nutrition is, but it's also the companionship felt as someone visits them each day while delivering a meal," she continued.
The Council on Aging serves more than 275 households daily with hot and cold meals to ensure that elderly and disabled homebound individuals can maintain their health and independence. This national program is recognized across the country, with communities rallying behind the agencies that provide the service. "We're finding an increasing need for these services in our community," states Wilda Belisle, Meals on Wheels Director for the Council on Aging. "But with higher costs for food and fuel, and fewer volunteers, continuing this service requires more funding. At an average cost of $5 per meal, the work of the Stonegate Women's Golf Asso. is incredible and will provide more than 1,500 meals for our community residents," she continued.
With support and cooperation from the Stonegate Golf Club and Avatar's Solivita community, there was a high turn out of golfers and active bidding on the many raffle and silent auction items donated for the event. Sponsors for the event include the Platinum Level Sponsor, Wellcare Health Plans followed by Florida Financial Strategies, Sunrise Pest Services, Toho Water Authority, Secure Horizons/Evercare, Visiting Angels, Henderson Sachs, PA, Ron's Golf Carts, Proscape, Liberty Mutual, State Farm, Kissimmee Florist and The Computer Guy. More than a dozen businesses donated raffle or auction items. There was also an outpouring of generosity for the pets of Meals on Wheels recipients. "Some clients will actually go hungry to ensure their pets are fed, so this added feature to the tournament will help make sure the dogs and cats are given food as well," added Belisle.
